The department is actively involved in research in the area of power electronics static applications such as renewable/alternate energy power conditioning systems, active power filters, static var generators, battery charges and DC power supplies.  In the field of drives, the group focuses on variable speed compressors for air-conditioners and direct torque control of induction motor drives. The department currently consists of fourteen professors/lecturers and 3 technicians. In recent years the department has grown its expertise through its involvement in carrying out research projects and consultancies for industries and government agencies. The research and consultancy outcomes have been widely published in refereed journals and conference publications at both national and international levels. The department is always looking forward to collaborate as much as possible with industry and universities/college universities in Malaysia through platforms ranging from short-term to long-term consultancy, joint research and development, planning and training as well as post-graduate students supervisions.
