Aims :

To understand the characteristics and operation of Power Electronic Devices, the requirements andsuitable applications. To gain knowledge on power electronic topologies, modelling and simulation techniques, waveform generations and control, performance analysis and applications.
   

Contents:

1.0  Power Electronic Systems:

Overview of power electronics fundamentals – power switches, converters (AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC)
   

2.0  Modeling and Simulation:

Simulation approaches, state-space modeling, piece-wise linear, Use of MATLAB, Pspice package
   

3.0  Hard and Soft-Switching Techniques:

Hard-switching – pulse-width modulation, types of PWM (natural, regular sampling), harmonics elimination, methods of improving PWM performance, third harmonic injection, gear changing, generation of PWMSoft-switching – classification, zero-voltage switching, zero-current switching, clamping.
   

4.0 Utilities Applications

HVDC – 12 Pulse line frequency Converters, Control of HVDC Converters,Static VAR Compensation – Thyristor Controlled Inductors, Thyristor Switched Capacitors,Line Filters – dc side and ac side harmonic filters, 

5.0  Drive Applications

Criteria for Selecting Drive Components,AC and DC Drives Fundamentals and OperationsVariable Frequency PWM-VSI Drives, Control of Drives,
